So Much Media, So Many Links

So there's been a lot of lively press on the Seattle Erotic Art Festival, and with good reason. I'll expand on this some time Monday morning, but for now, suffice to say that it was my intention and my hope to bring artists into the show who would challenge any preconceived idea of what erotic art is, who makes it, and where it gets shown. I think everyone involved did an absolutely smashing job of succeeding and rising above and beyond that challenge.

You can read Regina Hackett's post here about the event, including links to her past reviews.

Jen Graves discusses the comfort level and/or a lack thereof surrounding what you may or may not see on the walls of such a Festival. I appreciate her perspective and admittance that it's a personal reaction and not a judgment. I only wish people would start talking about the art again.

Someone else on the SLOG offers a different take, with photos.

The Seattle Times throws us a favourable plug, and if you really want to be entertained, scroll through the comments. I'm still annoyed about the Cindy Sherman thing but I'm an art history snob and was so proud that I saw someone who tapped into the Marilyn Minter aesthetic. Feh.

Jim Demetre gives us a blurb on ArtDish.

City Arts takes a few photos at the artist's reception.

Emily Ann Pothast and Joey Veltkamp blog about their involvement and the artist's opening reception.

And last but not least, if you want to hear me get super-uber art nerd on KUOW's The Conversation, you can catch a podcast on the Conversation page of the website.

If I've missed anything, my apologies but feel free to add them to the list in the comments!

Thanks to the entire organizing committee of the Festival, all the innumerable volunteers who have done the grunt work, and of course, to all the artists. Without them, none of this would have been possible.

And special thanks go out to artist, art wrangler, and exhibition goddess extraordinaire Claire Johnson, for asking me in the first place. (seriously, she's installing the Cornish BFA show as we speak in addition to having just hung SEAF)

Tonight's the last night, and tomorrow is the Open House -- you can catch the art for free! And by the way, also tomorrow; Emily's presenting a slide lecture on art, sex, and spirituality at the Sharma Center.

And remember, in the immortal words of my aunt Priscilla, if art isn't sexy in one way or another, it isn't doing it's job. Damn straight, Priscilla!

Have a great weekend!

Awesome, thank you -- I've created a permalink to the artist interviews in the menu up top, too.

Troy, you and everyone totally rocked the socks off of this show. Thanks so much for being a part of it.

(and you're welcome, although that feels so weird to say :P)

Sharon, it was delightful to meet and work with you. You were integral in helping to bring a whole new dimension to the festival, and in my view it was extremely successful.

And Claire really is amazing, isn't she? One of the constant challenges for the committee in working with her is trying to keep an eye on her to make sure she doesn't work so hard that she hurts herself! She sometimes tends to lose her sense of self preservation when it comes to putting art out into the world...

Hope to see you again soon!
