I realise that for some, a lack of consistent posting either in time or subject can result in blogger death. For example, Penelope Trunk of
Brazen Careerist recently
admonished those of us who are scattered and remiss, and I had to laugh because really, the only point of this blog is to talk about anything related to art and well, that's a... widely cast net.
But while she makes a few good points about blogs without a point, artists-as-bloggers are a different breed. One could argue that like many
bloggers companies entities (whatever), we're pushing a product - ourselves - but I believe we're also using this as a supplement to our studio practise. This blog and what I write about reflects who or what I'm looking at and how, and in a way, demonstrates how it's feeding my work. While
the best writing always comes from what affects us the most, for me, that's going to be quite an eclectic variety of things and uh, may or may not include some good writing. Neither good nor bad writing are happening currently, but when this blog is quiet you can trust I'm working overtime in the studio and I'll have something to say relatively soon. Good and bad. [we're smiling, here]
For now as I endure my self-imposed art-producing exile, I look forward to my coming freedom and return to the keyboard some time in November, with possibly erratic bursts of verbal enthusiasm throughout the next three weeks.
Dear reader, bear with us artists-sometimes-writers. We're a wistful lot, torn between dayjobs, harebrained ideas, overanalytical processes, and daydreaming. And sometimes writing. But mostly dreaming.

I fully support your exile, and not just because you are making work for our show!
ReplyDeleteI skimmed this blog by this lady that you posted...why did I skim it? well because it was rambling and BORING. he he he. There are no rules to writing, and like photography on the web, everyone suddenly has what they think is a giant audience so they can post any old crap they want. Everyone knows that a constant blog on a direct topic will get the most readers. d u h.
Shitty blogs out there only make the good ones stand out. If you are really concerned about constant readership then well, maybe you should pay attention to the marketing aspect of the whole genre, but otherwise just write from your heart, and try to use good grammar.
I'm rambling here, so no one will still be reading, but Sharon, your blog does have focus. We'll all come back to you when you start writing more.
Ah, thank you Molo! You're right about rambling. And I think people who write because it's what they really want to do are less concerned about readership and those are the blogs I enjoy the most. Writing is like art - we have make it for ourselves first, and everything else falls into place, right? I enjoy the conversations that come out of these posts, and that's enough for me.
ReplyDeleteI don't mean to be apologetic for my absence, but I do like to check in now and then to let you guys know I'm still here (thanks for still being here) :)
Its a constant battle to find time to hide away from all the noise and just do art. Self imposed exile is the only way to be able to focus and keep from letting all the mediocrity of everyday responsibilities seep in. Thats why you have such lovely work. And thats what makes me want to read your blog. Thanks for letting us in on your thoughts and process.
ReplyDeleteCrystal, thank you!
ReplyDeleteFor goodness sake Sharon, you should never feel bad about rambling on a blog! Inspiration comes from it -- I've never had anything published that wasn't born of rambling and refining!
ReplyDeleteWhen Uncle Dan had time to write his art blog, so many of his pieces were inspired from it -- there is true saddness when something must be given up to accomodate the rest of ones life...
Be here when you can.....the rest of us will be here too.....remember there is no real definition of blogging...or art for that matter...it is what you make it.....it is who you are....it evolves along with life....some days are simply better than others. :)
*hah* That is definitely true, too - thanks :)
ReplyDeletehere here! well said, Sharon! thanks for speaking on behalf of artist-sometimes-writers everywhere.
ReplyDeleteThanks Susanna :)
ReplyDeleteI guess Mono is right as well, harsh maybe but true yes. Hope you starting writing again soon.
